President Biden’s administration is launching several initiatives that intend to increase the use of solar energy. One of the initiatives, from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, would better enable people in government-issued housing to access solar energy.
A fact sheet from the White House states this would enable as many as 4.5 million homes to gain access to solar energy, which could potentially save families an average of 10 percent annually on electricity.
The administration is also launching a pilot program in Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, and Washington, D.C., to make solar power that is produced locally more accessible for low-income households.
The administration’s actions come as some in Congress are calling for President Biden to declare a climate change national emergency, but it remains unclear whether or not he will do so.
